How to Developed Four-wheel Drive Vehicles

Priya Singh asked:

Land Rover is a brand held in high regard across the world, which holds true for even the most remote parts of the globe where only a vehicle of its tremendous capabilities can traverse. As one of the manufacturers to pioneer four-wheel drive vehicles, Land Rover has developed a reputation for building the most thoroughly engineered SUVs in the world.

The original Range Rover, introduced in 1970, was the first four-wheel-drive vehicle to use coil springs and four-wheel disc brakes – making it the first to refine the on-road dynamics of this type of vehicle. The Range Rover Sport, introduced in 2005, quickly became the car of choice on the high street. The question is – does it live up to its promise? And what better time than now to get a real sense of just how capable the Range Rover fleet being inherited by Tata Motors really is.

Since its reputation precedes it, there’s a lot expected of this car even before you get into the drivers seat. Give it some thought, though, and you do begin to question the point of a Range Rover Sport. After all, isn’t that an oxymoron? How could an SUV of almost 3 tonnes possibly be sporty? Well, I’m about to find out…

From the outside

The styling of the Range Rover Sport demonstrates the effectiveness of a clean cut design. This isn’t a design with concave surfaces that you have to grow to love. It’s straightforward and handsome with several design cues taken from the traditional Range Rover – including its square jaw and wraparound bonnet. It has a muscular, squat stance, and looks very purposeful sitting on massive 20-inch wheels. The Sport also provides some clues – such as vents in the front fenders, dual exhausts, and huge Brembo front brakes – hinting that it’s something very special indeed.

On the road

Once on the move, the car doesn’t feel as big as it initially appears. The very refined driving experience makes the car feel as it’s shrinking around you. You get a commanding view of the road with a large square bonnet outstretched in front. The Land Cruiser also has an array of cameras and sensors that let you know exactly what’s happening at all four corners.

The extremely smooth and powerful V8 propels this mammoth machine with sublime ease. While it’s ordinarily very silent, you can hear a nice V8 rumble when you step on the accelerator pedal with some intent. The 5-speed automatic transmission is also exceptional as the gear changes are seamless and almost imperceptible. You do have the option of going through the gears manually if you so choose. Again, the shifts are extremely smooth and very quick, but sometimes the computer does overrule your command and shift whenever it sees fit. For example, if you have your foot to the floor and choose to up-shift just before the 5700rpm redline, the computer will analyze throttle position and shift only when it reaches said redline – undoubtedly to aid your effort of picking up speed quickly.

The Land Cruiser has massive tires (285/60 R18) that provide great stability and grip – both on and off the road. It handles extremely well and has very good body control with minimal body roll for a car of its size. Its Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System that adjusts the stiffness of the front and rear anti-roll bars in accordance with the conditions achieves this. Also, while the weight of the steering at low speeds is heavier than most Toyotas, the Land Cruiser actually has quite good steering feel.

Lamborghini – a Ferrari Killer?

IC asked:

Just like when talking about Ferrari, Lamborghini projects a clear image of power and wealth to those who own one of these super vehicles. This is an Italian company founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963, so it can be said that this car manufacturing company is fairly new, but it has kept an excellent quality and performance record which rivals that of Ferrari.

Unlike Ferrari’s founder (Enzo Ferrari), Lamborghini’s founded did not have a passion for racing cars like Enzo did, quite the contrary, Ferruccio Lamborghini had a tractor factory!. This tractor factory was indeed the financial base used to create the car company Lamborghini.

The origins of the company as told by Ferruccio Lamborghini’s son is quite amazing. It turns out that Ferruccio went to meet Enzo Ferrari at his factory to complain about he quality of the clutch in the Ferrari 250 GT which he owned at the time (this is a sports car model of the 1950′s). Enzo Ferrari then sent him away by telling him to go drive tractors because he didn’t know how to drive cars. Lamborghini then had his Ferrari’s clutch dismantled and realized that the clutch manufacturer was the same company which provided the clutches for his tractors!, Lamborghini then found a spare part in his warehouse which the thought might solve the problem and voila!, it did the job indeed. Ever since, Lamborghini became a dissatisfied Ferrari client and aimed to beat Ferrari in his own game.

Ferruccio then decided that his cars would have a V12 engine so he hired Giotto Bizzarrini who worked under Ferrari’s engine development team in the past.

And as it turns out, Ferrari and Lamborghini are two automotive groups which are considered rival companies, and equivalents in quality as well as price.

Ever since its creation, Lamborghini has experienced continuous sales growth. It’s cars are among the most powerful, expensive and exclusive in the world, they feature several exclusive characteristics such as high tech V10 – V12 engines, carbon fiber construction and custom styling by the most prestigious automotive designers such as: Franco Scaglione, Zagato, Marcello Gandini, etc.

Among the most recent popular models produced by this company we have: the V12 Lamborghini Diablo reaching a maximum speed of 330km/h; the V12 Lamborghini Murcielago; the V10 Gallardo; the V12 Murcielago LP640 and last but not the least the one of a kind Lamborghini Reventon debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto show. This vehicle manufacturer is without a doubt one of the best in the world.

Rent A Exotic Porsche Sports Car and Dazzle in Las Vegas, Nevada

Paul Fitzgerald asked:

Las Vegas is a city of excess, a city where nothing is ever half done and everything is created to inspire or impress. In a city like this, looks can be everything. Your clothes must be fashionable and the hotels and places you go to, trendy and hip. Here, nothing is too much, may it be the size of the diamonds you wear to an exclusive party, or the amount you spend on the roulette table. And if you plan to drink in the sights and sounds of this marvelous city, then you also need the hottest ride, because admit it or not, people do look at the car your driving, especially in Vegas.

If you’re keen on turning heads around when you arrive at the city’s swankiest, hippest spots, or even when you’re just driving down the city’s neon lighted streets, then you should rent a Porsche sports car

because it would be the perfect car for you. Although there are thousands of other cars available in Las Vegas’ many rental companies, such as classic cars, luxury cars, and exotic cars, sports cars like those offered by Porsche has embedded itself on people’s minds as the car to drive when you want people around you to notice.

Why do we say this? The fact that Porsche won the award of being the most prestigious vehicle brand in 2006 tells us how people view Porsche cars. The award giving body, the Luxury Institute of New York, surveyed 500 households, and Porsche came out as the clear winner when it came to what people thought was the most luxurious car brand, the car they thought was classy, expensive, and of the best quality.

It also helps that Porsche cars have, for a long time, been associated with wealth and power, especially in the media. In popular cult movies such as Scarface and American Psycho, Porsche cars are used prominently. Songs have been made in honor of Porsche cars, and in many popular racing video games, Porsche cars make appearances, too. Thus, it is not unremarkable that the cars and the brand have been fixed in the minds of many people, car enthusiasts or not.

So if you plan on visiting Las Vegas and you want to make an impression, a good one at that, then head to the nearest rental car company once you arrive at the city. Overlook their offerings of classic, luxury, or exotic cars and head directly to their sports car section. No need to look at the other brands. You know that Porsche is the only way to go if you want a ride that would surely attract everyone’s attention. Choose the Porsche car that fits your style, get the keys, and head out into the city, knowing all eyes will be on you wherever you go.

Porsche 911

Danny Lambert asked:

The name

Interestingly, the car that we today know as the 911 was initially named the 901 (901 being its internal project number). However, the rival company Peugeot objected to the name on the ground that they had an exclusive right to name cars with three digits and the middle digit being 0. Although these rights were only valid in France, Porsche renamed the line of cars to 911 to avoid any complications. Thus was the name for one of the most popular automobiles in history selected; as a compromise.

The development

Since it’s unveiling in 1963, the 911 has gone through many transformations and with the advent of newer and most advanced technology, the modifications are still going on. The 911 range can broadly be classified into two on the basis of the cooling technology used in them. They are –

• Air cooled – These vehicles used air as the cooling medium for the engines and thus the heat losses were substantial. The earliest 911’s were of this type and the technology was used by Porsche till 1998. The cars built with this technology include Porsche 911 classic (1964-1989), Porsche 964 (1989-1993) and Porsche 993 (1993-1998) wide body.

• Water cooled – As the name reveals, this line of vehicles had water as the cooling medium and thus their efficiency improved manifold. This technology has been adopted by Porsche for all its vehicles since 1998. The cars built with this technology include Porsche 996 (1999-2004) and Porsche 997 (2004-Present).

Interesting facts about the 911

• The 911 is the third oldest sport car nameplate still in production in the world.

• A poll for the Car of the Century saw the 911 being voted the fifth favourite.

Pushing the Limits With Lamborghini Tuning

Andy Adams asked:

Lamborghinis are well known as being exceptional cars, they signify prestige and power and usually you’ll need a six figure income to afford one.  Assuming you have then there’s a good chance you’ll be enjoying the speed and luxury of such a great car.

The thing is that for many petrol heads who own a car they will want to push that car to its limits and get the absolute most out of the car and its engine.  By modifying or tuning any car you’ll be able to customise the ride of that car.

Whether it’s increasing the speed, acceleration, braking or handling then there is bound to be a part or a tweak for you to alter in order to achieve your desired effect.  Just because Lamborghinis are among the fastest cars in the world, especially the latest powerhouse featured in this year’s summer blockbuster The Dark Knight, the Murcielago LP640, this doesn’t mean that you can’t get any better than the factory settings.

There are plenty of power inducing Performance Parts for Lamborghini that can help generate 5 to 10% more power in your Lamborghini and whilst it may seem small to most people but if you want to be the cream of the cream of the crop then you’ll look to making your sports car better than the next person’s.

Various Lamborghini Tuning parts include uprating your turbo unit to reduce lag and increase peak power, other ways including making the inside of your engine icy cold whether you are heating and cooling the engine block or engaging in a bit of forced induction to keep everything nice and cool whilst being able to reach super speeds.

Other ways in which you can make a more noticeable alteration to your Lamborghini is visual alterations; many customisation groups can provide a more racing car styled body kit to complement the raging bull engine within.

There are many Lamborghini pictures of these kits as well as other styling mods like new alloy wheels, there are a plethora of different styles and sizes, Lamborghinis look stunning with larger sized alloy wheels and even coloured wheels can help make your Lamborghini stand out even more.

Porsche Celebrates Production of 100,000 911s

Anthony Fontanelle asked:

Porsche AG has created another remarkable milestone in the automotive realm. The Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker produces another worthy page of amazing success in its survival book. The success story is boosted by its iconic sports car – the 911.

Earlier, the German automaker commemorated the production of 100,000th 911 unit built since April 2004. The milestone was attained with the latest (997) model manufactured at Porsche’s main plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany.

“It is with great pride that we celebrate this outstanding achievement for the 911, a vehicle renowned for its performance and style,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, the CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “We look forward to many more years of delighting sports car enthusiasts who have long looked to Porsche to deliver unsurpassed engineering excellence.”

Year 2006 was a record sales year for the 911 in the United States, Porsche’s largest market, with 12,045 units sold. So far this year, sales of the 911 are up by nine percent over the same period in 2006.

The 911, the famous and distinctive sports car launched in 1963, has undergone continuous development since its introduction in 1964. The sports car is notable for being rear engined and air-cooled, until the launch of the all-new Type 996 in 1999. The sports car features exceptional styling and cutting edge parts accessories consist of OEM Porsche oil filter, engines, radiators, cold air intake, and more.

Since its introduction, the 911 has been enhanced the pool of the automaker’s engineers as well as by private teams. They were modified to conform to the demands of racing, rallying and other types of auto competition. Watchers in the industry say that the 911 is the most successful competition car ever built. This is especially true when its variations, including the powerful 935, are considered. In the international poll for the award of Car of the Century, the sports car came fifth after the Ford Model T, the Mini, the Citroën DS and the Volkswagen Beetle.

By the mid-1970s, the German automaker was thinking that its 911 sports car might be getting a bit archaic. With an air-cooled, flat-six engine hung behind its rear axle and ever-advancing competition, the company’s 911 was on the brink of being phased out for the new 928, with its ultra-modern, front-mounted, water-cooled V8 and breathtaking styling.

But something unexpected happened – people kept purchasing 911s and eventually the car outlasted even its presumed successor. And the rest is history…

It is likely that Porsche never imagined back then that in 2007, they would attain a new production record with their iconic 911 by producing 100,000 of the current Type 997 series in a span of three years, faster than any other preceding generation 911. Having debuted in April 2004, the 997 series will be produced in 16 variants by fall of this year, from the base 911 Carrera to the track-conquering, yet street-drivable – 911 GT3 RS.

According to the German automaker, by July 31, the end of the 2006/2007 fiscal year, around 36,000 units from the 911 series will have been sold around the globe setting another remarkable record in the history of the sports car.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, or just Porsche, is founded in 1931 by then Austrian Ferdinand Porsche, the engineer behind the very first Volkswagen car.

The Atlanta, Ga.-based Porsche Cars North America, Inc. and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne sport utility vehicles for the United States and Canada. PCNA employs nearly 300 individuals who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, service, marketing and training for its 213 Canadian and U.S. dealers.
